Stockholm stands on 14 islands that makes it very popular among tourists who prefer sea voyages. Picturesque landscapes of the city, historical buildings and archeological masterpieces can be perfectly viewed from all the sides when you are on a boat.
One of the most popular healthy and fun ways to explore the city is to take a canoe tour. This way you can warm-up and see all beauty and mighty of Stockholm.

Though it is not a European sport, it is rather interesting how it got to the city. First prototype of canoe was used by Eskimo; they were made out of seal bones and skin. It was one, two or three seat boats that were used for hunting and fishing. Canoe was designed more than 6 000 years ago. It was popularized in North America where it was used as a water transport for a very long time. The first canoe in Europe appeared in London in XVIIII century, and was used as a sport boat. Then it made its way through the whole Europe and reached Swiss, where it formed the first canoe club in Stockholm.

One of the most popular canoe tours in Stockholm is called “Following the Vikings footsteps”. It goes through the canals of Garnsviken and beautiful Åkers, upon the mighty rivers and flows into the lakes Helgösjön and Vadasjön. Such type of sport might seem crazy at one point but it is very interesting and fun.

If you don’t want to take a tour you can simply rent a canoe or a kayak. There are numerous water signs and even river police that will help you in case you get lost. Canoe tours are exciting, interesting and thrilling. The only things that you will need are good humor, and a good company.
