Stockholm is one of the travel destinations, which requires consideration of weather forecast before going to. It is because of geographical proximity of cold northern areas and location of Stockholm in the surrounding of several seas and oceans (especially being related to the Baltic Sea). Although, the climate of Stockholm and generally in Sweden might be stated as moderate and soft, every season has own peculiarities related to oscillations, temperature and general weather conditions.
Summer season in Stockholm is a bit chilly, if compared to other European cities; its temperature ranges from 12-15° C (54-59° F) to 20-25° C (68-77° F). However, warm days of summer are frequent enough and the temperature often exceeds 25° C (77° F). In contrast, when Stockholm can boast of 18° C in July, the temperature in Greenland comprises nearly 0° C. Summer is the best time to visit Stockholm, when several hours of light per day reveal the best scenery and views of the city. Speaking about daylight hours, their duration varies during the year due to the location of Stockholm in northern latitudes: from 18 hours in July to 6 hours in December. Particularly, Stockholm receives 2000 hours of sun radiation per year.
This is the time, when swimming in neighboring lakes is very popular among citizens. Here one can observe the phenomenon of twilight all night (white nights). Usually it happens from June to September. There is no surprise that it is the time, when Stockholm’s residents take vacations in a large scale. In addition, July and August are the wettest months of the year: 539 mm of oscillations annualy are the normal indicator for Stockholm.
As a rule, autumn in Stockholm is very cool and rainy: the average temperature in October is 10° C (50° F). The first snow appears in November.
It has been already mentioned that climate in Stockholm and Sweden is a soft one, which might be noticed in winter season, when all the streets are covered with snow blanket, but there are no frosts to feel. During daytime the temperature varies from -3 to +3° C (26-38° F) and the snow might fall from November till April; although, long winters are very rare thing. The canals in Stockholm are covered with ice and skating becomes the most wide-spread and amusing way to spend some leisure time in winter.
In contrast to this season, spring is a very dry season in Stockholm, when the temperature ranges from 9° C (48° F) in April to 16° C (61° F) in May.
It is considered that visiting Stockholm is appropriate and comfortable in every season of the year; in particular, winter is mild with long and gloomy days, but easy to breathe, and summer is not very hot with long and shiny days to observe the beauty of Stockholm.
