Fun and recreation in the City of Stockholm, Sweden is not limited within the quiet confines of its museums, palaces, cathedrals and plazas. To the faint of heart, Stockholm is a haven of healthy and sun-filled outdoor activities while to the stalwart, the city is full of surprises and exciting recreational pursuits.

Winter sports are popular in Stockholm and there are plenty of snow sports to choose from in Stockholm. Ice skating, skiing and sledding are popular recreational activities during the colder months of December to February in Stockholm. Another sport which many people enjoy trying in Stockholm is winter swimming or ice water swimming. Although it may sound daunting, ice swimming is actually a very enjoyable activity in Stockholm as well in many other cities in Europe as a way to detoxify and de-stress the body, and is a favorite activity offered in many Stockholm spas and saunas.

Other water sports are also very popular in Stockholm, especially because of the fact that the city’s major islands are surrounded by the waters of the Baltic Sea and Lake Malaren. Canoing, kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, rowing, and jet skiing are water sports that many tourists and locals enjoy doing especially during the summer season of Stockholm. Climbing is also a great sport to try during the warmer months of summer although there are also several indoor climbing facilities in the City of Stockholm that are available any season.

There are also plenty of sports and recreational facilities available to Stockholm visitors all throughout the year. Several tennis courts, basketball courts, squash courts, and volleyball courts are located all over the islands of Stockholm. Horseback riding along the parks and trails of Stockholm is also very enjoyable because of the great views and fresh air that Stockholm has to offer.
