In 1989 the calm and composed city of Stockholm turned into the object of international attention, when the Globe Arena was constructed (known also as Ericsson Globe)! Stockholm Globe Arena definitely stands out against the background of historic monuments, magnificent churches and unique architecture of the city. Due to its out-of-ordinary view it looks like a big snowball dropped on the peaceful scenery of Swedish capital.
The significance of the Globe Arena is obvious, as far as this spherical building is seen from any point of the city. Stockholm residents might boast of keeping the biggest spherical building in the world, which is 85 meters high and has the diameter of 110 meters. The other peculiar thing is that Globe Arena is a part of the whole Sweden Solar System dispersed all over the country. In particular, Stockholm construction is an image of the sun in the scales of 1: 20 000 000. The Earth and the Moon are preserved in the Historic Museum 8 km away from Globe Arena site.
Globe Arena might be considered the set of attractions, including concerts and sport tournaments gathering visitors constantly.
The other way Globe Arena draws an attention, is the SkyView excursion. To be more precise, the external surface of the construction maintains railings, which carry two glass spheres with passengers inside. Their common name is “gondolas”. By going on such an excursion, a visitor might receive possibility to have a breathtaking view on Stockholm scenery, see every detail of urban architecture and watch an everyday life of the city.
Notwithstanding its prime purpose of holding hockey matches, first and foremost, the international fame of Globe Arena is justified by the number of prominent figures having a speech in this hall, multiple concerts given by world-known singers and musicians and the arrangement of sport championships. Among top-people who visited Globe Arena, it is appropriate to name
The Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, and even Pope John Paul II held a mass here. Speaking of musical performances it is impossible not to mention Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Globe Arena in 2000 and, apparently, will be hosted in 2013 due to recent victory of Swedish singer Loreen. Globe Arena offers seats for nearly 15 thousand people, which encourage the concerts of world- famous musicians. The other part of performances conducted in the construction is sport tournaments, including Europe Championships in volley-ball, basket-ball, hand-ball, World Hockey Championships, World Ice Hockey Cups, etc.
As it was mentioned earlier, Globe Arena is also known as Ericsson Globe, which is preconditioned by acquiring of naming rights by Swedish telecommunications corporation Ericsson on February 2nd 2009. To date Globe Arena has a new official name, but for Stockholm residents it is still simply “The globe”. The structure of Globe Arena fascinates from outside and inside: 1500 parking spaces, 7 restaurants, 6 entrances and 1 for disabled people, three stages and VIP-boxes. The creators of Globe Arena have probably thought long and hard while building this masterpiece, so every its visitor is likely to be astonished for sure.
