Just as any other European country, development of media began due to the growth of literacy between the local people. The first schools in Sweden appeared in the XIII century, several centuries after the country became one of the biggest media ports on the continent.
The first daily newspaper in Stockholm appeared in 1763 - “Everything for the day”. The newspaper unlighted most important events of the day. It also included recipes and important advice.
Newspapers, Magazines
The year 1766 was marked by an important decision of the king that changed future of the media in Sweden. It was the year when Gustavo III adopted a law of freedom of the press. Since that year Sweden began to develop its media in every possible way. Every big city and even every little town had their own newspaper.
Today Sweden can be truly called the most media country in the Northern part of Europe. Such little country as Sweden has more than 2 000 newspapers and magazines. According to the surveys an ordinary Swedish regularly reads more than 3 magazines, that is why Sweden is called the most media country in the Northern Europe.
Since 1995 there are 5 most popular magazines that are occupy media market. They are family weekly magazines. The circulation of political, economic and literary magazines is rather small.
Radio
First radio in Sweden appeared in 1925. Since that year and up till 1950 there was only one radio channel – National Radio of Sweden. Today there are 4 governmental radio stations and more than 165 commercial ones. These radio stations are more about music and entertainment. Radio is considered to be the most appreciable type of media in Sweden. As it has long-distance cities that are difficult to get to, radio became a substantial and most important media entertainment in the country.
Television
As most developed countries in the world, Sweden opened its first channel in the late 50s. In 1969 the second national channel was put on action. There is also a third national channel that is ironically called TV-4. Just as any other country, Sweden has commercial channels that air entertainment programs, movies, politics and news. Other international channels are popular as well. BBC, Animal Planet and Viasat History take the leading places in Swedish TV.
Internet
First internet providers were used as electronic libraries where each Swedish could find necessary book or its location in the country. Today it is a gigantic net that has well organized system. Due to the high level political, economic and business development it became a home to numerous world famous companies. Most of them are based in Stockholm Science City, which is one of the biggest informational and business centers in the world.
