Sweden scientific and educational activity is centered in both big and small cities of the country and there is no surprise that Stockholm has the biggest priority. The first researches of scientific character that date back to the 18th century lead to the establishment of national universities preserving importance and popularity even nowadays. An advantage of Stockholm universities to provide an education in various professional fields, benefits to both native and foreign students. Here is an overview of some prominent universities of Swedish capital.
Certainly, Stockholm University is the most popular and well-known, which was founded in 1878 and is specialized in natural sciences. To date, it has three more faculties in addition: law and humanitarian faculties since 1904 and faculty of social sciences since 1960. The number of students attending lectures and practices reaches 50 thousand alongside 6 thousand of stuff members. Every year this establishment offers nearly 900 various courses and 40 programs to study at. Speaking about tutors and lecturers, it is impossible not to mention that Stockholm University can boast of certain world-famous scientists, who worked here: Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya, the first female professor in the world; Svante August Arrhenius, the first to be awarded with Nobel Prize in Chemistry in Sweden; Ernst Ingmar Bergman, one of famous people of Stockholm, theatrical and film director; Östen Dahl, language expert of modernity.
The biggest technological institute of Scandinavian Peninsula is located precisely in Stockholm, which appears to be the Royal Institute of Technology. It was founded in 1827 and nowadays, besides specializing in different fields of technology, it features on nuclear physics. Among merits of Royal Institute of Technology it is important to note the construction of the first Swedish reactor in 1954, which was operated until 1970. Educational and research activities cover a wide range of subjects - from natural sciences to engineering with all their variations, among which: architecture, industrial organization, management, urban development, scientific and technical ecology.
In the northern suburb of Stockholm the oldest military academy in the world is situated, which is Karlberg Academy. It has been functioning in the same castle since 1792, which appears to be the former royal residency of King Gustaf III. Every year it has 300 graduates, who eventually become lieutenants in the navy, army or the captains of Swedish Air Force. It is also an object of tourist attraction and it remains opened for visitors.
Stockholm School of Economics was founded in 1909, the oldest educational establishment in economics in the country. It is famous for business and management education on the international level, having own subsidiaries in other countries (Russia, Latvia) and collaborating with prominent multinational companies and European institutes.
Among other outstanding representatives of higher education it is worth mentioning Stockholm Theology School, National Academy of Mime and Acting, Royal College of Music, Stockholm Institute of Education, Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, University College of Dance, University College of Opera, etc. Hence, one may see that higher education in Swedish capital catches all the fields of science, which attracts enormous quantity of students.
